Chapel of Mercy in Nice
Discover in photos and virtual tours of this world masterpiece of baroque art located on Cours Saleya, in old Nice, a few meters from the seaside.
Brotherhood of the Black Penitents
The chapel is managed and guarded by the archconfraternity of the Black Penitents. There are several brotherhoods of Penitents in Nice: the Red Penitents a few tens of meters away at the chapel of the Très-Sainte-Trinité and du Saint-Suaire; the White Penitents at the Chapel of the Holy Cross and finally the Blue Penitents, Garibaldi square.
These chapels are unfortunately not open continuously and are often inaccessible due to security or renovation work. The few 360 ° views and photos on this page may allow you to wait before being able to visit the premises. Note that it is possible on site when the chapel is open to buy cards and books dedicated to the Black Penitents and to the chapel.
The Black Penitents were created in 1329 during the big Cholera epidemic. They dedicated themselves for a long time to accompanying those condemned to death and then to managing the only credit system at the time through a pawnshop.
Thank you to the members of the archconfraternity who received us and showed us around the chapel in early 2019. A live visit will not, however, replace these digital insights, which are intended to encourage you to go there.
The chapel is located in the middle of the famous Cours Saleya, a colorful and very touristy market. Place Pierre Gautier borders the chapel to the west of it, where you will find a nice flower market. Stairs facing the square provide a glimpse of the market and the Chapel of Mercy from above. Baroque art lovers should not miss a visit to the Lascaris Palace at 15 rue Droit, a blog article is available here with some photos.
Do not miss a visit to the sacristy with a Virgin of Mercy, as well as other paintings including a work attributed to the Nice painter Louis Bréa (1450-1525).
